Mikola Statkevich, the only well-known former Belarusian political prisoner to have remained in the country after his release, gave an interview to the German outlet Die Zeit. In the conversation, he spoke about life in Belarus, offers to travel abroad for medical treatment in Germany, and the mood in Belarusian society.
According to Statkevich, he is under special surveillance by the KGB, and he and his wife have a rule not to discuss plans at home. He refuses to leave the country despite offers of medical treatment, including from Germany, where his daughters and grandchildren live.
The politician said that after his release he had no passport with which to access medical care, and the document was returned to him later. He also said that the demolition of a building in the Minsk "scientists' settlement" where he lives accelerated after his release.
